How to connect to a PC - LUMIX Cameras

You can transfer the pictures in the camera to a PC by connecting the camera and the PC.


Preparations:

  • Turn the computer on.
  • Prepare folders for receiving images on the PC before sending a picture to the PC.
  • If the standard settings are changed for the workgroup on the connected PC, you must change settings in PC Connection on your cameras.

Transferring Images to a PC


Using a USB connection

  • Connect the computer and camera with the USB connection cable (supplied).
    • Please turn your Lumix camera on and your PC before connecting.
    • Check the directions of the connectors, and plug them straight in or unplug them straight out. (Otherwise the connectors may bend out of shape, which may cause malfunction.)
    • Do not use any other USB connection cables except the supplied one or a genuine Panasonic USB connection cable (DMW-USBC1).
  • Press the arrow s up or down [▼ / ▲] to select [PC], and then press [MENU/SET].
    • DMC-FH22, DMC-FH27, DMC-FP5, DMC-FP7, DMC-FX700:
      • A drive ([LUMIX]) is displayed in [Computer]
    • DMC-FH2, DMC-FH22, DMC-FH25, DMC-FH5, DMC-FP5, DMC-FP7, DMC-FX700:
      • A drive ([Removable Disk]) is displayed in [My Computer]
  • Drag and drop files and folders in the camera to the PC.
    • DMC-FH4, DMC-FH6
      • Use "PHOTOfunSTUDIO" to copy pictures to your computer. For details on how to use, refer to the PHOTOfunSTUDIO manual.
      • When the image transfer is complete, disconnect the USB connection cable safely.

Note:

  • If the remaining battery power becomes low while the camera and the PC are communicating, the alarm beeps. Disconnect the USB connection cable safely. Otherwise, data may be destroyed.
  • Before inserting or removing a card, turn the camera off and disconnect the USB connection cable. Otherwise, data may be destroyed.

Transferring over Wi-Fi

Press [Menu] → [Setup] → [Wi-Fi] → [Wi-Fi Function] → [New Connection] → [Send Images While Recording] / [Send Images Stored in the Camera] → [PC]


  1. Select [Via Network] or [Direct] to connect.
  2. Enter the name of the computer that you want to connect.
    • For Mac, enter the NetBIOS name
  3. Select the folder you want to send to.
  4. Check the send settings, and select [Set]
    • To change the send setting, press the display button.
  5. Take a still picture use [Send Images While Recording].
  6. Select the picture use [Send Images Stored in the Camera].

Note:

  • Folders sorted by the sent date are created in the specified folder, and pictures are saved in those folders.
  • If the screen for a user account and password entry appears, enter the one you set on your PC.
  • If the computer name contains spaces, etc., the name may not be properly recognized. If you cannot connect, we recommend changing the computer name to a combination of 15 or less alphanumeric characters only.
    • For Mac, the NetBIOS name.
  • If a firewall is enabled by the OS or security software, your camera may be unable to connect to the computer.
  • When auto transfer in the Bluetooth is set to on, Wi-Fi Function is disabled.

Using an SD Card

The camera is a "plug and play" USB product.When the camera is connected to the computer via USB, it is recognized as a drive and can be accessed through “My Computer”. By double-clicking on the “My Computer" icon, you will see a list of all the drives located on your computer [3½ floppy (A), Local disc (C), etc.].


If the camera is connected properly, you will see a "Removable disk" icon which is the camera drive.


To locate your images

  1. Double-click on "Removable disk" and you will see a file folder called "DCIM".
  2. Double-click on "DCIM" and you will see a folder called "100 Pana" or similar as it varies by camera.
  3. Double-click on the "100 Pana" folder and the images from the camera should be listed.

To save your images

  1. Press "CTRL+A" or using the file menu, select "EDIT-SELECT ALL".
  2. Select "CTRL+C" or "EDIT-COPY".
  3. Using Windows Explorer (WINDOWS KEY + E), select the folder, on the hard drive, where you want to save the images. You may want to create a new folder before you copy, or use the Windows standard "My Pictures" folder. When you are in the folder, where you want to save your images, press "CTRL+V" or using the file menu, select "EDIT-PASTE".

At this point, you should see the images copied or being copied to the assigned folder.

Transferring Images to Mac


The supplied software (PHOTOfunSTUDIO) is not Mac compatible.
  1. Connect the camera to the Mac via USB, selecting PC on the cameras connection options. The camera will install using drivers built into the Mac and appear on the desktop.
  2. iPhoto should start up automatically when the camera is connected to the Mac, and give you the option to import your Photos and Motion JPEG Video. We recommend using OSX 10.4 onwards and iPhoto 08 onwards.
  3. To download your AVCHD video should that option be available on your camera you will need to use the iMovie from Apple. iMovie will not automatically open.
  4. You will need to open iMovie and then click on the Import button on the left hand side of the software.

Playback on a PC (PHOTOfunSTUDIO)

  1. To install the supplied software (PHOTOfunSTUDIO), close all running applications first.
  2. Check the operating environment of PHOTOfunSTUDIO 8.0 or 9.0 LE (Supplied software version will vary depending on model.)
    • Refer to the Operating Instructions of "PHOTOfunSTUDIO" for further information about the operating environment.
  3. Insert the CD-ROM with the supplied software. The install menu will start.
  4. Click on the [Applications] on the install menu.
  5. Click on [Recommended Installation]. Proceed with the installation according to messages appearing on your screen.
    • The software compatible with your PC will be installed.
    • PHOTOfunSTUDIO is not compatible with a Mac (Apple) computer.

To create a folder that receives images


When using PHOTOfunSTUDIO

  1. Install PHOTOfunSTUDIO on the PC.
  2. Create a folder that receives images with PHOTOfunSTUDIO.
  • Some PCs can read directly from the card removed from the camera. For details, refer to the operating instructions of your PC.
  • If the computer being used does not support SDXC Memory Cards, a message prompting you to format may appear. (Doing so will cause recorded images to be erased so do not choose to format.) If the card is not recognized, please refer to the support site.

Note: Software for image playback or editing is not supplied with the model DMC-ZS45

Alternate Editing Software for PC

  • For Still Pictures: Microsoft Windows Photo Viewer/Windows Photo Gallery/ Windows Live Photo Gallery (online service)
  • For For Motion Pictures: QuickTime/iTunes, provided by Apple
    • Software supporting MP4 format is required.

About the folder structure of the camera


The content (folder structure) of the built-in memory of the camera/the card is displayed on a PC as follows:


Folder Structure
  • [DCIM]
    • [100_PANA]
      • [P1000001.JPG]
      • [P1000002.JPG]
      • [P1000003.JPG] ---- [P1000999.JPG]
    • [101_PANA]
    • [102_PANA] ---- [999-PANA]
      • A new folder is created when a card containing a folder with the same folder number has been inserted (Such as when pictures were taken using another maker of camera).
      • A new folder is created when there is a picture with file name/number ending in 999 inside the folder.
  • [MISC]
  • [PRIVATE]*
    • Cannot be created in the built-in memory.

Cannot install the camera software driver


The message you may be receiving is for Windows Logo testing which only indicates that Microsoft itself has not tested the compatibility of this software. Panasonic has thoroughly tested this software and confirms it is Windows XP compatible. Simply click [Continue Anyway] and carry on with the installation of the driver software.


  • You are not required to install the USB driver on the supplied disc, unless you are using Windows® 98 or Windows® 98SE. If you are using Windows® ME, 2000, XP, VISTA, or Windows 7 or 8, you do not need to install the USB driver as these operating systems have Lumix camera software drivers pre-installed.
  • As soon as you connect the camera to your PC via USB cable, the PC should recognize that you have a camera connected. Please ensure that the camera is in "Playback" mode before you connect the USB cable to the PC. If the camera has a USB mode setting, ensure it is set to USB mode and not Pictbridge.
  • The camera is a Plug and Play USB product. When the camera is connected to the computer via USB, it is recognized as a drive and can be accessed through "My Computer". By double-clicking on "My Computer", you will see a list of all the drives located on your computer such as 3½ floppy (A), Local disc (C), etc. If the camera is connected properly, you will see "Removable Disk" which is the camera drive.

Troubleshooting Steps

  • If you are using USB connections on the Front of a desktop computer system please try using a USB port on the back.
  • If you are using an external USB HUB or Multi adaptor please try disconnecting the External HUB and plug the camera directly to the computer system.
  • If you are using the USB connections on the back of the computer and the camera still does not install you will need to see if the camera appears in device manager. It may appear under Other Devices or Unknown devices with an exclamation mark.
  • A way to confirm that the camera or cable is not faulty is to try and connect the camera to another computer system.
