Troubleshooting - Problems receiving faxes.

What happens when someone tries to send a fax?

Does the fax machine ring?

Yes, but it just continues to ring. If it continues to ring, check that 'auto answer' is on. If you have distinctive ring service, make sure you have programmed the correct ring pattern. Depending on your fax model, these instructions may vary. Consult your operation manual for details pertaining to your particular fax model.

The fax machine rings and answers but nothing happens.

  • If your fax model has a junk mail prohibitor, turn it off.
  • Ensure that the unit is connected via the LINE input located on the back
  • Ensure that the unit is connected directly to the wall jack. Do not connect using a splitter or other telephone product.

Are you able to send a fax?

If you can send a fax, this indicates that there is nothing wrong with the fax modem and you should be able to receive faxes. If you cannot send and receive after testing multiple locations, then there may be a problem with the modem.

Ensure that another electronic device is not connected to the same line that may be causing an interruption. Common products that cause interference are DSL lines (high speed Internet via telephone line); answering machines, and home security systems.

The fax machine does not ring.

Do you have other telephones connected to the same line? If yes, do they ring? If yes, pick up the handset of the fax machine and check for a dial tone. If no dial tone is detected, make sure the fax system is connected directly to the telephone jack and not connected using a splitter or other telephone device. If the fax system is not connected directly, plug the unit directly to the wall jack and try again.

If the unit is connected directly to the wall and you still are not getting a dial tone, try using a different telephone jack that you know is working.

If there is still no dial tone, contact a service center. For information on service select "Support Links" then "Service locator".
