Camcorder error messages


Panasonic camcorders provide messages when they detect something is not correct. This may be operational or product related.
Use the list below to troubleshoot the message you are receiving.


If you receive a message that is not listed below Refer to your models Operating Manual for specific error messages.

The unit is in recovery mode.


If faulty management information is found, the messages may appear and a repair is performed. (Repairing may take time depending on the error.)

  • " ! " is displayed when abnormal management information is detected when the scenes are displayed in thumbnail.

Notes on recovery mode.

  • Use a sufficiently charged battery or the AC adaptor.
  • Depending on the condition of the data, it may not be possible to completely repair the data.
  • If recovery fails, it will not be possible to play back scenes recorded before the unit turned off.
  • When data recorded on another device is recovered, it may not be possible to play back the data on this unit or the other device.
  • If recovery fails, turn the unit off and on again after waiting a while. If recovery fails repeatedly, format a media on the unit. Please be aware that if a media is formatted, then all the data recorded on the media will be erased.
  • If the thumbnail information is recovered, displaying the thumb nails may become slower.
  • You cannot recover scenes recorded as Backup for Twin Camera an d information on Highlight Playback scenes in MP4 format.

Cancel card lock to write information


Message is received when copying between SD cards or copying to an external media device.


The write-protect switch of the copy destination SD card is locked. Unlock the write-protect switch of the SD card.

Cannot be used due to incompatible data


Message is received during recording or playback.


This SD card cannot be used with this unit. Insert a recordable SD card.

Cannot copy


Message is received during copying between SD cards or copying to an external media device.


This is displayed when AVCHD scenes on the SD card and those on the copy destination media differ in their system frequency (59.94 Hz/ 50.00 Hz).

AVCHD scenes with different system frequencies cannot be recorded to the same media.

Copy AVCHD scenes to a recordable media so that their system frequency and that of AVCHD scenes on the media match.

Cannot copy - Date capacity is full


Message is received during copying between SD cards or copying to an external media device.


This is displayed when no more scenes can be copied after the maximum limit set by applicable standards is reached, for example.

Use an SD card with enough recordable space.

This is displayed when an attempt to access the SD card in this unit fails.

Cannot delete data on card


Message is received during thumbnail and menu operation.


The SD card cannot be formatted.

Cannot Protect


Message is received during thumbnail and menu operation.


The content versions do not match. This is displayed when you try to set protection for scenes recorded with another device, for example.

Match the device and content version.

Cannot Record - Date capacity is full


Message is received during recording or playback.


This is displayed when you try to record in excess of the maximum number of scenes allowed for one SD card.

Cannot Record - incompatible control data


Message is received during recording or playback.

The number of scenes that can be selected with this unit has reached the maximum limit.

Cannot use SD card in video mode, control data error


Message is received during recording or playback.


This is displayed when the management information cannot be recovered.

  • The operation will stop.
  • Use another SD card to perform recording.

Card error. Please reformat


Message is received during thumbnail and menu operation.


This is displayed when the SD card cannot be formatted.

  • Check the SD card.
  • Replace the SD card in the card slot at which the error has occurred.

Check card


Message is received during recording or playback.


  • This SD card is not supported or compatible by this unit. Check the SD card. Try another card.
    Refer to your models Operating Manual for specific card requirements.
  • If this message appears even though motion pictures and still pictures are recorded on an SD card, the card may be unstable. Reinsert the SD card, then turn the unit off and then on again.
  • For models that use a micro SD card, make sure the card is placed in the adapter correctly.

Connection failed. Please check network settings of connected device


It may be impossible to connect from some Web services such as “LUMIX CLUB” and USTREAM. Try to reconnect after waiting a short while.

Connection to wireless access point failed


Occurs during wireless LAN connection


This is displayed when a connection to the wireless access point cannot be established.

Check the settings for [WIRELESS SETUP] and [Wireless LAN setup], and the settings on the wireless access point.

Defective management information has been found.

Disconnect usb cable


Message is received during USB Device mode.


An error has occurred while accessing the SD card, or the OS is not supported.

  • Check the SD card.
  • Check to see if the OS is supported.

Environment too dark


  • Before turning on the unit, open the lens cover.
  • This message may also be displayed when recording in a very dark location.

Error occurred. Please turn unit off, then turn on again


Model HC-X1

Message is received during recording or playback.

This is displayed if the SD card is removed or writing to the SD card fails while recording is in progress. Check the SD card

It is also displayed when the lens of the camera does not move. Turn off and on this unit, and then check to see if the lens moves.


All Other Models

  • The unit has automatically detected an error. Restart the unit by turning the unit off and on.
  • The unit will be turned off in about 1 minute if the unit is not turned off and on.
  • Repair is needed if it is repeatedly displayed even if it is restarted. Detach the power connected, and consult the dealer who you purchased this unit from or contact a Panasonic Authorized Servicenter. Do not attempt to repair the unit by yourself.

Error occurred. Recording is stopped.


Message is received during recording or playback.


This is displayed when the SD card is removed during recording or data cannot be written to the SD card correctly. Check the SD card

Change the copy destination media, or delete unnecessary scenes.

Failed to connect wireless access point


  • Check the Wi-Fi set up of your wireless access point and smartphone.
  • [WPS Connection] can establish a connection only between two devices: this unit and a device that will connect to this unit. Check if multiple devices are trying to establish a connection in the WPS waiting state simultaneously.

Formatting Failed


Message is received during USB Host mode.

  • Before turning on the unit, open the lens cover.

When using [DLNA Play], if you do not operate the DLNA-compatible device you are connected to for a while, it will be displayed. Check the status of the DLNA device you are connected to.

No wireless access point found


  • Check the Wi-Fi set up of your wireless access point and smartphone.

An external drive that this unit cannot recognize is connected. Check if the USB HDD can be connected and used with this unit and try to reconnect.


In the following cases a USB HDD cannot be used by connecting it to this unit:

  • A USB HDD with a capacity of below 160 GB or above 2 TB.
  • When a USB HDD has two or more partitions.
  • If a USB HDD is in a format other than FAT32. FAT32 is a format used for SDHC Memory Cards.
  • Models HC-WXF1, HC-V800, HC-VX1, HC-W580, HC-V180, HC-V210, HC-V270, HC-V380 If a USB HDD is in a format other than FAT32/exFAT. exFAT is a format used for SDXC Memory Cards.
  • When connected by using a USB hub.

Message is received when copying between SD cards or copying to an external media device.


The copy destination media lacks adequate space.

Super slow mode no audio recording


Message is received during recording or playback.


Audio cannot be recorded if you record using Super Slow Recording.

To record audio, disable Super Slow Recording.

This battery cannot be used


Possible cause and solutions

  • Use a battery that is compatible with this unit.
  • If using a Panasonic battery compatible with this unit, remove the battery and then insert it again. If the message appears even after repeating this several times, this unit needs repair. Detach the power and consult a Panasonic Authorized Service Centre. Do not attempt to repair it by yourself.
  • You are attempting to connect an AC adaptor not compatible with this unit. Use the supplied AC adaptor.

About batteries that you can use with this unit


The battery that can be used with this unit is VW-VBT190/VW-VBT380.


The unit has a function for distinguishing batteries which can be used safely. The dedicated battery (VW-VBT190/VW-VBT380) supports this function. The only batteries suitable for use with this unit are genuine Panasonic products and batteries manufactured by other companies and certified by Panasonic. Panasonic cannot in any way guarantee the quality, performance or safety of batteries which have been manufactured by other companies and are not genuine Panasonic products.


It has been found that counterfeit battery packs which look very similar to the genuine product are made available to purchase in some markets. Some of these battery packs are not adequately protected with internal protection to meet the requirements of appropriate safety standards. There is a possibility that these battery packs may lead to fire or explosion. Please be advised that we are not liable for any accident or failure occurring as a result of use of a counterfeit battery pack. To ensure that safe products are used we would recommend that a genuine Panasonic battery pack is used.

This is displayed when one or more of the scenes you are trying to copy cannot be played back on this unit.

Message is received during thumbnail and menu operation.


This is displayed when thumbnail information is not recorded correctly.

This is displayed if the SD card is removed or writing to the SD card fails while recovery is in progress.

Message is received during thumbnail and menu operation.


Formatting is not possible due to, for example, a problem with the SD card.

VFR on, no audio recording


Message is received during recording or playback.


Audio cannot be recorded if you change the frame rate when using Variable Frame Rate Mode.
